My dad is affectionately known as "Papa" to his 5 grandchildren. In addition to being a loving and caring grandfather, and the world's best rambunctious playmate to all of them, he also writes a very special blessing for each one when they are born that he gives when they are dedicated in church. Since we don't attend church regularly (although I would like to find a church home when Elliott is old enough to go to Sunday school), my dad chose to give Elliott's blessing while we were in Livermore, during a picnic at Murrietta's Well, the winery where Steve and I were married.
It was an intimate moment in a beautiful setting, and I asked my dad if I could share it with all of you. He very kindly agreed, so here it is:
Firstborn of my Firstborn
And
Forth of my children’s children,
May you grow in the world of men to a Troubadour and Peacemaker, bridging discord between God with his creation and between men with humor and music. Also, in this fallen world may the Lord give you eyes to see and ears to hear TRUTH as you follow the path that he sets before you. And most of all, as you follow God’s path, may it bring you peace, freedom and joy of the abundant life Jesus promises.
Amen,
Papa
I can't find the words to share how special it was to have my dad verbalize his hopes and wishes for my son. My dad speaks and writes from the heart, and his words are everything I too hope Elliott experiences in life - peace and freedom in this modern and complicated world which is amazing and downright scary at the same time. And becoming a peacemaker and bridging discord is a fitting legacy for someone born on the 10 year anniversary of September 11.
As we near the 1 year celebration of Elliott's birth, I am just as amazed by the precious wonders of life as the day he was born. With each new day this experience of parenthood, and the joy and love it brings, deepens. It also makes me more appreciative of my own parents, and everything they have done, and continue to do, to support me as I continue through this crazy adventure called Life.
