Happy 1 Month Birthday Elliott!

October 11, 2011

Time really does fly when you are having fun - it's hard to believe our little man is one month old already!  With all of our company gone, and Steve back at work, it was up to Reese and I to make the day special for him.  We celebrated by taking a long walk to the coffee shop together...

After that we had outdoor play time.  Reese loves Elliott, and is relentless in trying to get Elliott to throw the ball for him.  He doesn't quite understand that Elliott doesn't have the muscle strength or coordination for that yet.  Reese also smothers Elliott in kisses, which I frequently have to interrupt. I keep telling Reese to have patience, and that in a year or two Elliott will make a great playmate. (I know - it's ironic that the patience talk is coming from me)

Once Daddy got home we celebrated with some tasty treats from Renaud's bakery.  Elliott got to enjoy sucking on his pacifier while we ate.  He's not quite ready for cake yet.

The following day we went to the pediatrician for his 1 month check up.  He now weighs 10 lbs 3 oz (up 3 pounds from when we left the hospital!)  What a chubby bunny! Gotta love those cheeks:)

I took the opportunity to bombard the pediatrician with my page long list of questions/concerns.  On the top of my list were his unusual fussiness, his inability to fall asleep and take naps during the day, and his 2 hour grunting spells in the wee hours of the morning.  It seems that all too often he looks like this - or at least more often than a mother's heart can handle.

It turns out Elliott has silent reflux, where the contents of his stomach travel back up his esophagus, but instead of spitting up he swallows it back down.  The pediatrician gave us quite a few suggestions to help alleviate his pain, including having him sleep propped up in the bouncy chair.  I am happy to say that he is now napping like a champ, which gives mommy some much needed rest and a chance to pick up around the house.  We are still working on managing the reflux so he is not in as much pain, and have good moments and bad moments throughout the day.  We are so thankful to know the reason for his fussiness, and look forward to getting him back to the happy, good natured kid he really is.

In the mornings and late evenings we get good playtime with him where he is alert, engaged, and smiling which are so much fun.  Here are a few of my favorite "Happy Elliott" moments:

While it seems that Elliott has grown so much since in his short life this picture helps put things in perspective for me.  Elliott has Steve's feet, but he has some more growing to do before he can fill those shoes.  He's still our little man for a little bit longer.
